Wilson Sporting Goods, the producer of NFL balls since 1941, christened the ball in honor of Wellington Mara to acknowledge his father Tim Mara for securing the deal that designated Wilson as the NFL's official football supplier. Initially employed from 1941 until 1970, the nickname resurfaced on the game ball in 2006 following Wellington Mara's passing in 2005.
